Hard-boiled and plodding, SU Arun Kumar is Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 is an action thriller that is distributed across a single night. It throws its audiences in a stratified world where decisions and repercussions count more than the mass action. All critics hail Vikram with a reserved but explosive turn as Kaali, the former gangster, who with his new-found ways and a peaceful family life is pulled against his wishes into the world of the violence once the family is threatened. The character of SJ Suryah, an archetype that is inexplicably tiring, surprises and brings the much-needed depth to morally grey cop.

The peculiarity of the experience during watching this movie is that it immerses the viewer directly into the center of the world of the movie and does not provide the context. Such a sense of narrative authority provides an opportunity to the viewers to become more active by constructing relationships and pasts themselves. This choice of Arun Kumar to postpone exposition initially works to its favor, creating interest. What might have been quite generic experience is added to by the realities of little, incidental moments and a more grounded approach to the action.

It is not without its flaws in the movie. Its rhythm also adds to this, particularly in the second half, which takes away the tension that surges in the initial stages. The decision to include a flashback explaining the Sudhakar incident that probably had to be made on the mass appeal front waters down the precious mystery that is developed in the first half. The same lack of elevated stakes is not achieved with a technically impressive, yet emotionally inadequate, one-shot sequence, at the climax of the film. The last act, though, is gradually more and more dependent upon nostalgia and Vikram beats in the mass that seem tonally incongruent with the bare story otherwise.

Not an easy movie to make. Applause should be given to such movies. Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 is a bold and strong love story with Vikram in his finest role ever. And even when it falters during the last third, with stuttering pacing and unnecessary callbacks, it is a compelling and terrifying experience. It is a good watch to people who enjoy character based action movies that are subtle in nature.

Cast

The man who is trapped between his violent past and peaceful present, Vikram as K. Kaali has come up with one of his best acts. His subtle and yet conservative approach brings in an element of richness to it where all the elements of danger of a former gangster and all the possibilities of getting a loving family man are realized. The mass heroism is balanced by Vikram in a world that is not extraordinary, which raises the movie by a considerable margin.

S. J. Suryah in the role of SP A. Arunagiri IPS is simultaneously an engaging combination of wickedness and vexation. Suryah, with his caprice, here diminishes it, and anime in a multiplicity of layers, creates an antagonist, a man of unpredictable character, driven virtually by personal revenge. His acting gives a vital suspense in the game of cat and mouse.

Suraj Venjaramoodu is introduced to the Tamil audience as Kannan, and the transformation of a man who seems submissive to the one who is about to become serious is impressive. There is a smoldering fury in his performance, which erupts at crucial points, and that is a hell of a thing to observe.

Kalaivaani played by Dushara Vijayan is powerful and sensitive. Instead of being an ordinary heroine, being a wife of a hero, she stands on her own, having a silent power that influences the decisions of Kaali.

There are good supporting roles of Prudhvi Raj as Periyavar, Ravi, and Maruthi Prakashraj, but Venkat, a minor character, played by Baalaji, adds credibility to the movie. Overall, the actors make a perfect foundation to the dramatic story.

Critical Reviews

T Maruthi Acharya of India Today rated the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and explained the film as follows; Chiyaan Vikram is to die with in the film, and he makes a good impression as he takes his seat in Paadi Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2, which is easily one of his most recent performances of the years. It is a slow-burning thriller set in one night, that places more emphasis on choices and consequences rather than gun fights. It is not even-paced yet heavy-handed, full of good acting and true action, therefore it works. It is a kind of marriage between great cinematography and rich storyline even though there was a slight drag in the latter half.

Prashanth Vallavan of Cinema Express rated the film three and a half out of five stars and praised it as an atmospheric narrative, with no exposition dumping between the characters talking to one another. The center of all the intrigue is SJ Suryah. He is a man with multiple layers to him, and his performance is not pure one but is morally grey. The Kaali by Vikram combines commercial heroism and the real world. Even the minor background roles are respected in the movie giving out the general impression of genuineness. Although the pacing lacks, the length and an experimental one-shot sequence diminish the entertainment.

The critic of the Times of India rated the movie three out of five stars and commended the movie as a gripping opening that throws the audience into an unfolding battle without any previous explanation. Vikram of course is shining as Kaali in a power tussle. The former half does not break the mystery, whereas the second half fails with a non-creative back story. A solid cinematography and action work by Frank Marshall is spoiled by a poor third act and some awkward nostalgia that prevents the movie from achieving this bigger-than-life status.

Avinash Ramachandran, in a three-out-of-five-star review of the Indian Express, also cast disapproving glances at Kaithi as he mentioned Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2, but praised it as having a special beat and character-driven storyline. Vikram is very good as Kaali, a reformed criminal who returned to violence compelling him into the system where the maximum potential of the character is lost. The film is uplifted by good camera work, well performed action and emotional richness, yet problems with pacing and a few unnecessary scenes bring it down. Overall, it is a good enough film that demonstrates the stardom of Vikram and his acting potential.

Audiences Reviews

Viewers were very positive about the film; almost 3.2 thousand users rated the film 7.5 stars out of 10 stars on IMDb, which is a good review in the film. In the internet, more than 916 individuals rated the movie 4.5 stars out of 5 stars which once again are good reviews of the movie.

Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 has been well-reviewed as a film with a well-gripping plot, acting and technical mastery. Some users have further highlighted that Vikram as Kaali is one of his best performances in recent times and a throwback to his old ways. It impressed them that he could know what would strike the masses but did a grounded and intense performance.

The bold and involving storytelling by director, S.U. Arun Kumar was enjoyed by most users. They also stated that the film does not feed the audience but instead, it just drops them right into the conflict-filled world and lets the story just come together naturally. The emotional through line of family, survival and wounded pride were particularly appreciated by the users, and gave the film under its action-thriller skin a good heart.

Technical talking points were also plenty. The night time cinematography by Theni Eswar and the single shot action sequence which was much hyped was very impressive to most users. The background music by GV Prakash was also well-received as one of his best compositions in his career which intensified the mood of the movie and the tensions in the movie brilliantly.

Nonetheless, there were people who criticized the film. That the second part, and particularly the flashback scenes, halted the pace put into it in the first part, as it was said. Other viewers had the impression that some of the plot was easy to predict and the climax could have been more striking. Even with these complaints, there were those who were able to see it despite the energy of the performances and the technical nature of the movie.

The album of Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 is very colorful and punchy in nature, and it corresponds with the adventurous character of the movie.

This album starts with the Veera Dheera Sooran Title Teaser, and that also with G. V. Prakash Kumar singing it. Although it is very short, less than a minute, the video has performed well on the Internet where it has been viewed by more than 20 million since it was uploaded by Think Music India. There is then another punchy song, Veera Dheera, by G. V. Prakash Kumar, which builds on the title theme, but is a little longer.

The third song, “Kalloorum,” switches to a more melodic land. It was beautifully sung by Haricharan and Shweta Mohan with the lyrics written by Vivek, and it was being praised by its fans with the song having crossed 12.5M views. It stands out because of its deep vocals and sentimentality.

Sang by G. V. Prakash Kumar and Sadhika K R, the song Aaathi Adi Aaathi does not calm the energy since it is rhythmic and catchy. Last but not the least, the album is capped with the folk-granted color of Ayla Allela which was sung by Velmurugan and composed by Vivek, a little bit of spice to the soundtrack.
