Trauma is a Tamil film written and directed by Thambithurai Mariyappan, which was released on 21 March 2025. Vivek Prasanna, Prathosh, and Ananth Nag play the main roles in the movie and Chandini Tamilarasan and others play the supporting roles. The movie has been made by S Uma Maheshwari under their label Turm Production and the movie distributor is yet to be identified.

The movie has Ajith Srinivasan working as the cinematographer, Mugan Vel as the editor of the movie and RS Rajprathap as the music manager. The duration of the movie is reported to be 1 hour and 52 minutes. The movie budget is said to be 5 crore rupee and day 1 box office collection is 30 lakh. The movie has got a number of songs.

Review

Thambidurai Mariyappan is the director of the trauma, who interlaces a bunch of stories about infertility scams and human feelings, yet misses the mark. The other film is about Sundar (Vivek Prasanna) who keeps his impotence silent to his pregnant bride Geetha (Chandini Tamilarasan), a budding romance between Selvi (Poornima Ravi) and Jeeva (Prathosh), and two petty thieves on the hunt to get easy cash. The wheel of that mechanism, the element where the hyperlink meshwork might be fulfilled by complexity, is the action; narrative strands seldom cross in significant ways.

Trauma deals with sensitive subject matter, critics have observed, fertility struggles, medical scams, and adoption, but not in a sufficiently in-depth way. The story loses credibility through logical twists like the repetitive ingestion of sedatives by the victims without any one raising eyebrows and the murder case being conducted without the simplest of procedures. Heavy-handed are emotional beats that are not earned, platonic dialogs concerning carnality and parenting.

There is sincerity in the acting, though Vivek Prasanna must find some method to inject some interest into his pale storyline, and Poornima Ravi must wallow in melodrama. One of the few strengths in the movie is the cinematography, by Ajith Srinivasan, which gives the movie a visual polished appearance. Nevertheless, the lack of the correct placement of humor, bad cliches and partial character growth makes it hard to continue being emotionally involved.

Whilst trauma might have outlined the actual emotional landmines of infertility and adoption, it rests on generic plot points, whereas the confrontations are sewn to the bone, the suspense is spliced with the bone. Regardless of how good its message is, the incoherence, the lack of emotional depth, and the lack of logic of the movie leave it alone.

Cast

Surprisingly, Vivek Prasanna brings out Sundar with his depth and restraint, a man working with the stigma of infertility. It is weak writing and Sundar can introduce some vulnerability to the character to make the in-between-ness of his character to come alive, despite some other sections of the screenplay not working. Prathosh, as Jeeva, attempts to give life to his role of a free-wheeling, lucky love interest and the character is so shallow that his acting came off like a one-note, despite the best efforts.

Ananth Nag is a friend of Sundar, an ideological tool and not a full-fledged character. His screen time is not much but he makes the best out of the little that the script can give him. Chandini Tamilarasan is Geetha, the wife of Sundar, unfortunately she has been given a role of one note whose primary agenda is to reflect the frustrations of her husband. Chandini is a real person, in spite of her thin material, indicating emotional layers that are never delved in the writing.

Poornima Ravi as Selvi is making a performance that is trying to lift out of the melodrama that is surrounding her character. Although the story tends to base her performance on the familiar emotional tropes, she fills Selvi with a rough charisma and action. The actors perform well in general but their performance is lost in superficial writing and cliched plotlines.

Critical Reviews

Akshay Kumar of the Cinema Express rated the movie one out of five stars, and believed that Trauma fails to establish its feeting as it is disjointed and the character lines are weak. Its effort to make it a hyperlink structure is not very in-depth, and logical inconsistencies make the mystery weak. Forced laughs interrupt the rhythm, and more serious things such as adoption are rather left alone. It unfortunately does not impress with its expected ending.

Kirubhakar Purushothaman of News18 has rated the movie 2 out of five stars and is concerned with the movie based on using sexual violence as a convenient device to plot, and, as a matter of fact, it is becoming a common practice in Tamil cinema. The director avoids an exploitative gaze, but the film has sloppy writing, poorly connected plots, and misplaced humour. Its storyline takes too long to roll, and even its message about adopting children appears hollow. Even with all the proper cinematography, trauma is exasperatingly forgettable in the end since the writer tends to use easy shots.

Abhinav Subramanian of the Times of India reviewed the film with a two-star rating out of 5 stars and believed that Trauma was filled with improbabilities, including its ridiculous fertility scam, 18th Century ideas of masculinity, etc. The three plots intersect quite expectedly, relying on weak reasoning and artificial melodrama. The writing does not get deeper though it is a well executed play particularly through the performance of Vivek Prasanna. The film never reaches the emotional rhythms it believes it ought to, and to make a statement that means something. Everything is in it, but the narrative does not come together.

The film received good audience response. On the IMDb, the movie has only received 112 ratings of 7.9 stars out of 10 stars, which is a good mark of a Tamil movie. Also, such reviews may be counterfeit since the reviewers are low. Upon further reading those reviews at IMDb, I realized that there are no reviews; these are just ratings making me believe that they are fake reviews.

Songs

Trauma provides a tender, sentimental soundtrack tightly ingrained into the atmosphere and subjects of the movie. The album begins with the emotionally touching song written by RS Rajprathap and performed by Guru Ayyadurai, Shruthi S and Rajprathap himself, and it is called Trauma Varalaama. The song was released by Saregama Tamil, and is a charming introduction to the emotional heart of the movie, and has already collected a million views on YouTube.

Next comes Thaalilo which is a lullaby-like song composed by Magesh Balakrishnan and performed by K. S. Chithra and RS Rajprathap. An interest in such sweet singing and airy tune that it has grown to be a favorite in reply. A duet of Naresh Iyer and Pooja Vaidyanath, Oru Paarva, has a soothing relaxed feel to it, and is a song about romance, but is very meditative and very simplified lyrically yet heavy musical.
