Review

Nesippaya, written by Vishnuvardhan is a high budgeted compilation of romance, suspense, action, and drama however it fails, miserably, in maintaining a throbbing emotional connectivity throughout. Having included genres, non-linear plot, the film has a certain amount of visual and technical polish, but it fails to impress.

Arjun (Akash Murali) comes to Portugal to meet his past lover Diya (Aditi Shankar) diagnosed with a murder conviction. Their previous love affair with emotional twists and turns is juxtaposed with the crime-solving thriller with demands that come with it. Similar to the name of the title itself, it can be seen that the movie has a fascinating and purposeful structure, however, its unsynchronous screenplay and unresolved emotional storylines makes it a flawed movie.

Nesippaya Tamil Movie

The love is a disturbing nature of the romance and love is on the border of obsession. To Diya, with her desire to have her own space and to be expressive, the devotion of Arjun is so romantic and suffocating. The film is on the verge of being self-aware, admitting this unhealthy relationship, but never fully condemns it, and the audience finds itself in hysterics.

Akash Murali is an actor who makes a positive beginning, but he has not yet come out of age as an actor, in terms of emotions. Aditi Shankar has her shining moments when light is needed but she is not so effective in heavy scenes. The outstanding actor in the movie is Kalki Koechlin and he plays the role of a guy with a firm stand and sense of clarity and lawyer. Somehow Sarathkumar and Khushbu provide gravitas (they also have scenes to spare), although the score composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja is thankfully suitable in some of the key scenes.

The film is highly aesthetic in terms of visuals and the sceneries of Portugal look stunningly well capturing. The pace problems, excessive fight scenes and hackneyed screenplay options water down the suspense and emotional tension, however.

Nesippaya is a film that has good sound, intentions, and uneven execution although it has the slightly excellent performances and mastery. It is a well-themed socially relevant movie and well-acted, however, it lacks a sense of narrative coherence and clarity, which deny it the quality of a memorable movie. It has not been memorable, though it can be viewed.

Cast

Nesippaya stars Akash Murali, who does the job with earnestness as the hotheaded lover, Arjun who is caught in emotional and legal storm. Even though he is an impressive screen presence that matches some of his father, Murali, and his sister, Atharvaa, Akash is still learning the ropes, particularly on heavy emotion scenes dubbed in to be subtle.

Aditi Shankar brings out Diya with a slipshod Western style of acting. She is great in the early maturation love parts and she takes the role to a level of familiarity and believability. Her acting is weak, however, in the subsequent, emotionally-laden scenes, where the role demands it to possess more fire than it does here.

Kalki Koechlin is the radiant Indrani, whose only weakness is the passionate lawyer who has her office in Portugal. Her personality is a crystalline and level-headed response to the impulsivity of Arjun. Kalki takes control of each scene in which she appears with her screen presence, it is her use of dialogue and emotional palette.

The sons of the feuding parents, Adhinarayan and Vasundhra are given weight by veteran actors R. Sarathkumar and Khushbu Sundar. Their interactions with one another add dramatic value and the years of experience.

There is a minor, but important role of Prabhu as a special officer and good support of George Kora, Shiv Panditt, and Raja. Parvathi T and Sriranjani, who portray the mothers of the protagonists provide some emotional weight with soft and usually approachable acting.

Critical Reviews

India Today’s Janani K wrote and rated the movie two out of five and praised the return of Vishnuvardhan and introduction of Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar, but said that there was no depth, thrill or suspense in the movie. Vishnuvardhan has made best of films with the music by Yuvan Shankar Raja shinning through but the screenplay takes the expected course and the characters are desperate to be exploited.

Roopa Radhakrishnan of The Times of India rated the film at two and a half star out of five; she stated that the film managed to toggle between genres and that the supporting cast acted well however the thriller parts of this film were trite as was the way it dealt with a toxic love story. Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar were bright but they had no depth of emotion. There was a lot of good action on the movie, and the editing was genuinely good, but this movie was not up to expectations.

In Times Now, Raisa Nasreen rated the movie 2 out of 5 stars and applauded the movie in terms of dialogues and strong and fierce female characters together with her acting as Kalki Koechlin, but she criticized the pace of the movie, and the overly long screenplay of the movie. The movie did not make good use of good leads and an outstanding music performed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Two and a half out of five stars Jayabhuvaneshwari B of Cinema Express said of Nesippaya that it will appeal to those who enjoy their romance combined with crime and praised the performance and style of Kalki Koechlin but criticized the movie cliches and its stereotypical plot and hardening of the heart. There was nothing memorable about it partly because of bad pacing and depth, although the lead was refreshing.

Audiences Reviews

Nesippaya movie has had decent positive reviews by viewers and more than 2.2k filmgoers rated the film 5.8 stars out of 10 stars on IMDb and this is an decent good rating. When browsing a user review of Nesippaya, one can see that there is a big split in audience reactions, as some sections are full of adoration, while others contain criticism. It is much to boast of a romance drama, but a myriad portion of the audience acclaim the emotive narration of the film, picturisation, scores by Yuvan Shankar Raja and even their truthful response to the melancholy realities of romance.

The performance of Akash Murali, particularly his initial performance drew in some fans and most of them were astonished by the fact that he is just like his late father Murali and older brother Atharvaa. The professionalism of Aditi Shankar in her acting was divided, some liked her emotional spectrum and others claimed that she did not practice her role well during emotionally challenging situations.

Some of the remarks people have made about Kalki Koechlin are quite flattering; people claim that she has a nice presence on a screen and she did a great job portraying the role of the lawyer, Indrani. Other viewers also noted that the message of the movie, touching upon the true love, emotional strength, and relationship problems, resonated with them in woman viewers, who, however, seem to have found it especially resonant with younger viewers.

But it is shot through too, with keen undertones of criticism. Some perceived the narrative as cliched and bewildered and the rhythms as unequal, the second half of the story as predictable and the emotional scenes as artificial. A few of them referred to it as overrated, with suspiciously bloated ratings. Some other ones also lamented of underperforming chemistry in the leads and underperforming supporting characters.

Nesippaya has, therefore, proven to be a divisive film, there are still those who will claim that they have been bowled over by it, but others have not been impressed.

Songs

Nesippaya has emotionally sensitive and dreamy tune that is cooked with soul-charged arrangements and lyrics. They are mostly done by Yuvan Shankar Raja and they are in sync with the romance-introspective atmosphere of the film. The album begins with the light romantic song, Sol Nee Sol, by Pa. Vijay and Yuvan Shankar Raja. Even a minor melody song however picks up as a constant prelude to the adventure that is to be taken along.

It is followed by a fast yet severe exercise by Yuvan and Sathyaprakash titled Yarra Iva. It has lyrics by Adesh Krishna and is a reflective and intimate moment on the album. Tholanja Manasu, written by Pa. Vijay and performed by Yuvan is a new favorite among fans. The melancholic tune and the emotional singing it gives it two long-lasting replay qualities.

Fourth is a duet by Javed Ali and Bela Shende, including a song wrote by Vignesh Shivan titled, Nesippaya Nee Ennai. The song is blooded with sensitivity giving the album a feel of mature romance. The album concludes with the eerie and wandering of the duet of guitar break with the solo violin, the composition featuring Yuvan Shankar Raja and Haricharan, with inspirational lyrics by Pa. Vijay. It is an ideal touching closing of the soundtrack.

Having the five songs adding up to approximately 14 and half minutes, Nesippaya is quality rather than quantity, a six minute, but musically fulfilling experience.
